George Alexander Marshall Obituary The Sidney Democrat, April 21, 1899 HON. G. A. MARSHALL DEAD. He Died at His Home in This City This Morning. Hon. George A. Marshall, ex-member of Congress from this city, died at his home at the corner of Franklin avenue and Court street this morning about 7 o’clock of heart trouble. Ever since his return home from Washington, D.C., a few weeks ago, he has been seriously ill and has been confined to his house. He was not confined to his bed all the time but was able to be up and around the house. Last evening before retiring he complained more than usual but was not thought to be much worse. This morning he was unconscious and died a short time after the family got to his bedside. Mr. Marshall was born on September 15, 1849, on a farm in Turtle Creek township, where he spent his youth and lived to manhood, attending and teaching school. He finished his education by taking a course in the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware. After leaving school at Delaware he began the study of law in the office of Conklin & Burress in this city and in 1876 was admitted to the bar. After his admission to the bar he remained in the office of Conklin & Burress for one year, when he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Shelby county on the Democratic ticket and served in that office one term. In 1878 he formed a partnership with Judge Conklin and continued with him until 1882 when the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Marshall being again elected Prosecuting Attorney in that year. At the close of this term he was re-elected, in all served Shelby county three terms as Prosecuting Attorney and made a very efficient officer in that capacity. On his retirement from the office he continued his practice in this city, and was attorney in many prominent cases that have come up in the courts of Shelby and adjoining counties. He was for years closely allied with the Democratic party. In 1890 he was a candidate for Congress before that memorable convention which resulted in the nomination of Hon. M. K. Ganz, of Troy. In that convention he had the unanimous endorsement of Shelby county and Shelby county’s delegation worked hard for his nomination. In 1896 he was again Shelby county’s candidate for Congress and at the convention in St. Marys was nominated and served one term. He was married twice, his first wife, Miss Carrie Cowan, dying about eighteen months after their marriage. His second wife was Miss Lou Cowan to whom he was married on December 22, 1881, and who was a sister of his first wife. Mrs. Marshall and three sons, Samuel, Benjamin and Frank, survive him. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at his home in this city and according to a request made by him during his illness, as he often times said he did not believe he would get well, the body will be interred in the Presbyterian cemetery at Hardin. | |||
