William Hubbard Obituary

Piqua Daily Call, Saturday, April 1, 1922

ILLNESS OF A YEAR IS ENDED

William Hubbard, Native of Ireland, Succumbs to Malady After Long Suffering.

William Hubbard, aged 81 years, passed away quietly at his late home at Wood and Gordon streets, Friday afternoon at 2:45 o’clock after an extended illness of over a year.  Mr. Hubbard was born in Ireland, in October, 1841, coming to this country with his parents at the age of nine years, and locating in Miami county.  In 1869 he was married to Bridget Doolin, of Sidney, Ohio at the Holy Angel’s church of that place, and celebrated his golden wedding anniversary with his wife, October 26, 1919.  He has resided in this county since coming here with his parents, and has always been a member of St. Mary’s church.  He was also a member of the Holy Name society of that church.  Mr. Hubbard has during his residence here, and while his health permitted, been an active citizen, always supporting any project which seemed to him to be for the betterment of the city.  His long illness has been the source of regret to many friends; and although they are sorry that it ended in death, the fact that he has been relieved from his suffering, is consoling.  Surviving him are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. James Marshall, of Columbiana, Ohio, and Mrs. George W. Henne, of Mansfield, and one son, Mr. M. E. Hubbard, of Toledo, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning from the St. Mary’s church, with Rev. Father John F. Cogan in charge.  Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery.

DEATH OF AGED PIQUA CITIZEN CAUSES REGRET

Mrs. Bridget Ann Hubbard Succumbs This Morning After Suffering Stroke

The sudden illness last evening and the death early this morning of Mrs. Bridget Ann Hubbard, aged 81 years, of 654 Wood street, was a shock to the many friends of this estimable lady who had been a resident of Piqua for more than two score years.  Mrs. Hubbard had been in failing health for about a year and recently her condition was such that fears were entertained she might suffer a relapse, but in the past day or two she was apparently improved.  At 7 o’clock, while chatting with her granddaughter, Miss Helen Marshall, who lived with her, Mrs. Hubbard was suddenly stricken with paralysis.  Dr. J. F. Beachler, who has attended her for several years was called and he pronounced her condition as being critical.  She gradually relapsed into a coma and at 3 o’clock today passed away.  Everyone who knew Mrs. Hubbard loved her for her delightful personality.  A native of Ireland, she was gifted with rare Irish wit and her keenness of mind and quick perception made her interesting to converse with and her friends were legion in Piqua.  Particularly in the neighborhood where she had resided in the same location for 43 years will she be missed for she was one of the early settlers in this section of Piqua.  The husband, William Hubbard, died about five years ago after a lingering illness.  Miss Helen Marshall had made her home with her grandmother for eight years and during this time she has been devoted to her care and among the friends of the family, the sympathy of all will go out to Miss Marshall in the loss of her grandparent for her solicitude for Mrs. Hubbard has long been a subject of comment among Piquads owing to their being almost constantly together.  Three children survive.  They are Mrs. James A. Marshall of Mansfield, who arrived in the city about one hour after Mrs. Hubbard's death.  Mrs. G. W. Henne, also of Mansfield, and Mr. M. E. Hubbard of Toledo.  There are also ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Mrs. Hubbard was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic church and of the St. Ann’s Altar society of this church.  Members of this society are to meet at the late home for prayers on Monday evening at 8 o'clock.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the church.  Interment will be in Forest hill cemetery.
